C3 or c4 middle c12/29/2022 It's all about pitch.įirst of all you have to know that the C-key (any C-key) is the white one BEFORE two black ones. Another example: it's the very first note on the recorder when all 8 holes are covered, again this is C3. The pitch of the true middle C is always C3 and is always the same on any instrument no matter what size or range of keys. It’s always the same story: To pianists the middle C always appears to be C4 because of their position in relation to the instrument, which is ridiculous. when talking about the middle C (I’ve heard quite a few silly things over the years): “It’s closest to the middle of your instrument, it’s closest to your belly button when sitting at the middle (as if size of the instrument has got anything to do with pitch) or it’s the tone, the C you can match with your voice.” These statements are totally irrelevant a lot of pianists seem to confuse physical position and other rubbish, with pitch. So the middle C note sits immediately between the 2 clefs, in the middle of both.Ībout the physical position of the pianist, e.g. 5 lines above and 5 lines below the 6th line where the true middle C is situated (11 lines in total). In Music Notation the middle C (C3) is exactly centred on the 6th line between the bass clef and the treble clef i.e. When playing C4 on a standard 88 keys piano the note we would be hearing is C4 which is an octave above the middle C (C3). So, for a newbie who still likes to know things like numbers, is there any way to change the numbering so that C4 is middle C and not C3? It probably wouldn't be that hard to get used to, but it is a little annoying to have to remind myself that everything is an octave down from what the sheet says. All pianists will usually tell you that the middle C is C4 which is not correct. And after I Googled it, it seems like only 1 or 2 people have ever had this issue, the rest just use Studio One without knowing or caring about the position of middle C. I later learned that this is how it's done in some European countries, where middle C (C4 for America) is actually C3 for them. I took some sheet music I found and was transcribing it into Studio One's piano roll, when I realized that the numbering is off by an octave. I'm fairly new to digital music but have some training with piano, so I figured I would learn the ropes and just recreate a song before trying to make my own. This is a problem that I recently ran into that it seems no one else really seems to be bothered about.
